County Prep Students Learn About Public Transit

Instructors from the Rutgers’ Travel Independence Program (RUTIP) recently met with a group of County Prep juniors and seniors to teach them about using public transportation. Jeffrey Dennis and Jaqueline Ng from the RUTIP initiative gave students an introduction on how to use public buses and light rail. Students received instruction on how to use schedules, plan their trips, contact NJ Transit for information, and options for paying fares. Apps such as Transit and the NJ Transit app were discussed to help students with planning routes and tracking arrival times for buses and trains. Following the presentation, students applied their knowledge on a field experience to/from the Newport Mall using the #9 NJ Transit bus which stops outside of County Prep and returning via the light rail line. Students commented that they felt the training was a very helpful and comfortable introduction to using public transit safely and knowledgeably. This experience will help our graduates as they transition to college and work settings.
