It was inspiring to see hundreds of students statewide unite in the midst of a global pandemic and develop their leadership through competitive events, college presentations, networking opportunities, and career exploration from the comfort and safety of their own home. Competitive events, regardless of the results, provided extremely valuable opportunities for members to improve their academic ability, collaborate with each other, find solutions to obstacles our community faces today, and develop college and career readiness skills. Instead of gathering in-person, ten County Prep High School FCCLA students logged on to an online platform from Monday November 16 to Thursday November 19.2020 which blended virtual reality and gamification technology to transform FCCLA’s State Leadership Conference into an “on-demand” virtual experience. With just a click of a button, members had the opportunity to participate in the comfort and safety of their home.
Students worked virtually using creativity and digital savvy to collaborate with team members and connect with their instructors’, Chef John Palsi and Fashion Design and Merchandising teacher Ms. Janet Patten resulting in ten gold medals, for County Prep’s FCCLA chapter. The following students were awarded Gold Medals, the highest honor, in their events:
Priscilla Garcia - International Food Experience,
Nicole Fernandez and Ismar Pagan (team) – Fall Fest Cupcake Challenge
Madison Ragland and Gherese Felipe (team) – Career Search
Iman Mustafa, Catherine Chua – Creative Stitch
Amaya Thomas, Valeria Miranda and Camila Ramos - Fashion Design
In addition to gold medals the fashion students were given free summer workshops at Berkeley College.
